Frequently Asked Questions
Are you an animal shelter?
No. We are a 501c3 dog rescue, which is a little different. We rescue unwanted and homeless dogs from Alabama shelters and the community. We fully vet the dogs that we rescue: shots, spay/neuter, etc, and place them in foster care until it’s time to transport to Maine! Our ability to take dogs and puppies depends on how much space we have at any given time. Also, we cannot take dogs with aggression issues towards people or other dogs.
Why are the dogs sent to Maine?
Maine doesn’t have the extreme pet overpopulation issues that Alabama does. They have strict registration laws, which cuts down on the unwanted pet population. Unfortunately, Alabama simply does not have enough homes to place all of our unwanted pets. Also, hundreds die in shelters due to lack of space. We get as many out of Alabama as possible for those left behind to have a chance.
Where exactly do these dogs and puppies go to once transported to Maine?

They go to an amazing rescue called Rescue Charlie’s Friends. This rescue located in Woolwich, Maine thoroughly screens all applicants and matches each dog and puppy with the family that best fits their needs. Rescue Charlie’s Friends has a lengthy application process that involves an interview, references, and home inspection that ensures each dog or puppy gets the best home possible!

Which types of dogs get help?

We help all types of dogs. We are not breed-specific. We help puppies to adult dogs as space and funds allow. If a dog is having behavioral issues, such as lack of socialization, those dogs will either be placed with a trainer or experienced foster.

If i need to ask the rescue to take a dog, what information do I need?

We need good photos of the dog, the reason you need to surrender, personality of the dog, any behavioral or medical issues, sex, age, spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, up to date on heartworm and flea prevention, is the dog good with all people including kids, good with other dogs, good with cats, energy level.

How can I help Tails from Alabama?

Donate, transport, or foster. We are always needing assistance getting dogs to their vetting appointments, or picking up surrenders from the community. We are always needing fosters that will babysit our doggies for usually no more than six weeks at a time.
